Introductory Lesson

The YouTube video above is for a book reading of Stolen Words by Melanie Florence. Use the book for students, or if this project is being facilitated for older students, choose a story that can be used to engage and start the conversation with students about respecting the culture an identity of all individuals. Following the video, brainstorm with students what elements make up our identity such as celebrations, traditions, customs, clothing, foods etc. Plan the lesson to meet your own learners existing content and linguistic capabilities and knowledge. A suggestion is to complete a graphic organizer on the whiteboard with contributions from all learners. Write Culture/Identity in the centre and brainstorm together.
